A 24-year-old woman killed in a three-car accident in the Grass Valley area Saturday has been identified as Trula Middleton of Penn Valley.
Middleton's 35-year-old male passenger was also killed in the accident, while his identity cannot be released pending notification of next of kin, said Nevada County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Pettitt.
The accident occurred at Highway 20 and Rex Reservoir Road between Grass Valley and Penn Valley during sleet weather conditions, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Two others were injured in the accident: Mary Anne Ettlin, 49, of Penn Valley sustained moderate injuries, and Amy Nordin McLeran, 31, of Penn Valley suffered minor injuries.
"At (about 1:10 p.m.) a 2006 Honda Civic was eastbound on SR-20" at Rex Reservoir Road, the Highway Patrol statement said. "For unknown reasons, the Honda crossed into the westbound lanes of SR-20 and was struck broadside in the passengers side by a westbound Volvo wagon.
"As the Volvo turned in a clockwise manner, in front of a westbound Kia Rio, it was struck in the right rear.
"The Honda turned in a clockwise direction and rolled one time, coming to a rest on its wheels off the north edge of SR-20. The Volvo came to rest on the north roadway shoulder of SR-20, and the Kia Rio came to rest west of the Volvo, in the westbound #2 lane."
Middleton and her male passenger in the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.
The driver of the Volvo " Ettlin " was transported by ambulance to Sierra Nevada Hospital with moderate injuries.
The driver of the Kia Rio " Nordin McLeran "was transported by private party to sierra Nevada Hospital with minor injuries, and her 10-year-old male passenger had no injuries.
