Thelma May Painter was a people person who showed her generosity and hospitality in simple ways.
"My mother would welcome anyone into her home and offer them tea and a piece of homemade pie," said Cheryl Morden, Painter's daughter.
Painter died Dec. 24 at the Golden Empire Convalescent Home at the age of 92. Funeral services were held on Saturday.

Painter is survived by three daughters, a son, their spouses, 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Painter was actively involved in a variety of community services.
"She attended services regularly at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grass Valley and served on the luncheon committee," Morden said.
Painter was also the former president of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Manzanita Parlor number 29; and the former district deputy with the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Laurel Parlor, Morden said.

Painter was born on Spring Street in Nevada City in 1915 and grew up with her maternal parents on Carpenter Street in Grass Valley.
She had lost her mother Lucille Hughes Christenson at childbirth, and her father Arthur Christenson was a Nevada City blacksmith. Lucille Hughes belonged to an old family in the area after whom Hughes Road in Grass Valley was named.
Thelma Painter married Leland Russell Painter, an electrician by profession, in March 1946 at the Nevada City courthouse. They lived in Grass Valley first before moving to Albany, where they lived for 16 years. The couple moved back to Cedar Ridge in 1971.
After Leland Painter died in August 1977, Thelma Painter continued to live in Cedar Ridge till 2003, when she moved to Sierra View Manor in Grass Valley. She lived in Sierra View until July of this year, when she moved to Golden Empire Convalescent Hospital in Grass Valley.

Thelma Painter's surviving children are Lucille Key Ellis of Monroe, Wash.; Virginia Rose Velasquez of Fairfield; Harold Lee Painter of Crockett; and Cheryl Painter Morden of Grass Valley.
Thelma Painter was predeceased by her husband; a son named John Key; and a daughter, Lynette Hulsey.
