This summer, the Yuba Highlands project, near Beale Air Force Base and Spenceville Wildlife Area, was approved by the Yuba County Supervisors. The large number of homes (5,100), massive plans for sprawl in a remote location (leading to a lot of new pollution directly upwind from us), more Yuba River water pumping and numerous other parts of the plan are a cause for concern for many Nevada County residents and organizations.
A group of citizens has qualified a referendum that would overturn the board's decision. It will appear on the Feb. 5 ballot in Yuba County.
During the holidays, we at Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy, Friends of Spenceville, South Yuba River Citizens' League, Wolf Creek Community Alliance, Grass Valley Neighbors and many others urge you to educate yourself on the Yuba Highlands project and to vote with your dollars by sending donations to the "No on Yuba Highlands" campaign. Make your checks payable to "No on Yuba Highlands Committee" and send them to P.O. Box 1408, Wheatland, 95692. For details, go to

It's hard to find the perfect gift, but we think this one may well keep on giving for a long time to come.
