Investigators hunt for leads in home burglary case

Sheriff's detectives are seeking information from motorists who were traveling along Highway 49 Friday morning and may have spotted the suspects who stole five guns during a home burglary last week.

"Any information anyone has would be very helpful," Nevada County Sheriff's Detective Mike Sullivan said Tuesday.

Investigators are looking for descriptions of the men and the vehicle that is believed to have picked them up from the side of the highway where they abandoned a stolen pickup truck. Knowing the direction the vehicle left the scene could help the case, Sullivan said.

Detectives believe suspects were picked up by another vehicle somewhere between 8:50 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday. It's possible a passing motorist could have seen the men when they exchanged vehicles, Sullivan said.

The suspects abandoned a stolen maroon 2003 Ford F150 truck with an extended cab on the side of Highway 49, about half a mile above Independence Trail sometime between 8:50 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday, Sullivan said.

Detectives received the call at 8:58 a.m. Friday from a distraught woman who had walked into her home while a burglary was in progress. The woman lived about 4 miles North of Nevada City, on the 18000 block of Highway 49.

One intruder pointed a handgun at her, took her truck keys and her cellular telephone. Five guns were stolen from her home.

The woman identified the man who pointed the gun as 20 to 25 years old, about 5-feet-8-inches tall, with short black hair and possibly a goatee. He was wearing a red sweatshirt and baggy blue jeans.

Investigators collected evidence and fingerprints at the crime scene, but have no fresh leads, Sullivan said.

Anyone with information can call the Investigation Unit of the Nevada County Sheriff's Office at 265-1471.
