Forest Charter School certified

Forest Charter School received certification Tuesday from the California Charter Schools Association.

Among 619 charter schools statewide, Forest Charter is one of 58 schools certified by the association, said Gary Larson, spokesman for the California Charter Schools Association.

Bitney College Prep High School is the only other charter school in western Nevada County that earned similar certification, in May of this year.

“The certified charter schools program has become the industry standard for high quality and accountability in the charter school movement,” Larson said. “A certified charter school means it’s a model of excellence within the public school system.”

Forest Charter’s performance has improved in the past three years, as measured by statewide API scores released by the California Department of Education. The score measures academic performance in schools based on high school exit exams and the Standardized Testing and Reporting results.

“Forest Charter has increased its API score 71 points over the past three years,” Larson said. “They have received a 99-percent satisfaction rating from their parents and have seen an 8-percent increase in the number of students enrolling in a 4-year college or university immediately after graduating. Students from Forest have been accepted into some of the nation's top schools, including Dartmouth, Berkeley and Sarah Lawrence College.”

Forest Charter applied for certification in August this year, said Steve Canavero, assessment and accountability director at the school.

As part of the application, school officials had to demonstrate the school was accredited by a national accrediting agency, Canavero said.

“The process of getting certified is rigorous,” said Caprice Young, CEO and president of the California Charter Schools Association. “It provides the school the opportunity to document its practices.

“Most schools find that after they start the process (of documentation), they’ve improved (their services),” Young said.

“This is another stamp of approval that we’ve received for a high standard of academic excellence,” said Sandy McDivitt, executive director of Forest Charter School. “As a personalized learning school, we really attend to each student’s learning style, talent and interest. We have wonderful support classes, excellent instruction and varied ways for students to meet requirements for graduation.”

Forest Charter School is a kindergarten through twelfth-grade school in downtown Nevada City with 610 students, McDivitt said.
