Seventeen year old Nevada County Gold Archery Team member Trelaina Borges of Big Oak Valley has been named to the 2008 Junior Womens Olympic Recurve United States Archery Team.
Borges and 17-year-old teammate Gemma Goepel also of Big Oak Valley recently competed in the National Archery Association Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Colorado tournament was the last of a combined five national ranking tournaments that the pair competed in at various locations across the United States in 2007 to establish their respective rankings of fifth and 10th in a field of 47.
The top five ranked competitors in the Junior Division of which includes Borges will now represent the United States Internationally as a member of the Senior USAT team in 2008. Goepel, as a first year Junior will compete again in 2008 in the Junior Division for a spot on the 2009 team. Borges will now begin training with the Senior USAT at the United States Olympic Archery Training Center at Chula Vista.
Borges, even though successful in making the USAT Team, was not able to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Team Trials which begin in September 2007 due to injury. Her goal now is set to train and become a member of the 2012 Olympic Team.
Additionally, teammate Paige Pearce of Red Bluff continued her dominance of the Youth Compound Freestyle Division by competing two age divisions above her 12-year age division in the NAA National Championship.
She set eleven National records in the division. Two weeks earlier Pearce had won the NFAA (National Field Archery Association) National Championships in Darrington, Wash.
Borges and Goepel were the no. one ranked Female Cadet Olympic Recurve Archers in California in 2005 and 2006 respectively and have trained for four years with NAA /NFAA coach Charley Washburn of Nevada City.
Pearce has been an avid archer for most of her 12 years and was invited to join the other eleven elite archers of the Nevada County Gold Team four month ago by Washburn who is the head coach of the team
Other Gold Team members from the Grass Valley/Nevada City area at the Colorado tournament included Nelson Harris and Darce Hess.
