Street Magic Limo has won this year’s Gold Country Senior Softball Association championship.

With a record of 27-8-1 the Limos pulled away from the competition, losing only two games in the second half of the season and beating the second-place team by 61⁄2 games down the stretch.

The Limo team was picked by manager/pitcher Steve Burnett and was built around several key players including two of the most feared sluggers in the league: center fielder Bill Baxley (.711 batting average, 12 home runs and 95 RBIs) and third baseman Tommy Hess (.739, 8 triples, 63 RBIs). The team batted .606 for the season and scored 573 runs in 36 games.

Although at the beginning of the season, it did not look like the Limos would live up to their reputation. There are so many good players and teams in the league that in one game the Limos were left scratching their heads after scoring only three runs and fell as far as third place by losing six games in the first few weeks of the season.

The Limos rebounded though with sparkling offensive and defensive play by veteran pitcher Burnett (.710, 17 doubles, 69 RBs), shortstop Tony Clark (.629, 4 HR, 47 RBIs), left-center fielder Bill Johnson (.650, 7 3B, 51 RBIs), and right fielder Grant Montgomery (.608, 12 2B, 42 RBIs).

During the second half of the season it seemed as if different player rose to the occasion every night to help seal the victory and push the team farther up in the standings. Other veteran players making a contribution this season were: infielder Gil Dominguez (.611, 7 2B), infielder/outfielder Frank Seman (.524, 7 2B, 4 3B, 41 RBIs) right-center Fielder John Poulter (.459, 4 2B, 22 RBIs) and infielder Jim Weir (.364).

Rounding out the lineup were two outstanding rookie players: left fielder Doug McElvain (.566, 2 HR, 45 RBIs) and second baseman Chris Raymond (.538. 9 2B, 38 RBIs).

The race for second place was a bit closer with perennial winners Stucki Jewelers (20-14-1) edging out the Tax Dodgers (18-14-3). Coming in fourth place this season was The Union followed by The Tack Room in fifth place, Record Connection in sixth place, Penn Valley Mini Storage in seventh, Penn Valley Taco Shell in eighth, Pryor Construction in ninth and Grass Valley Ford in 10th place.

Tryouts for next season will begin in February, with league play to follow in March through September. Gold Country Senior Softball is a great way to get out of the house, make new friends, and play the game you played as a kid.

But for the Limos, the 2007 season ride to the championship will be one we’ll all remember forever.
