Yuba County supervisor Dan Logue has won backing for the 3rd District state Assembly seat from a conservative group in Nevada County - the backyard of his opponent, Sue Horne.
Logue's endorsement from the Nevada County Citizens for Responsible Government comes on the heels of others from regional GOP heavyweights, including Sen. Sam Aanestad of Grass Valley, current Assemblyman Rick Keene and former assemblyman Tim Leslie. Logue and Horne both are seeking the Republican nomination for Keene's seat.
"Sue's been great in Nevada County, but when it gets to the big pond, (Logue) will be the better person," said Kim Janousek, the conservative group's president. "He has a better grasp of the way the entire district runs, not just Nevada County. He's a stronger force."
The Nevada County Citizens for Responsible Government was formed in 2002 and helped to defeat the controversial NH2020 county land-use plan that was backed by area liberals.
Horne said she was disappointed not to receive the endorsement but added, "It's not deterring me. The leadership and support in my campaign is very grass-roots and encouraging to me."
The District 2 county supervisor also has gained the endorsement of supervisors from Sierra, Plumas and Lassen counties. Three state senators and 10 members of the assembly also have endorsed her.
"I've been working with state issues since the early 1990s," Horne said. "I've been in the trenches the last seven years working with (the Regional Council of Rural Counties) lobbying and advocating against regulation."
Horne's Nevada County endorsements have come from Undersheriff John Trauner and from supervisors Nate Beason, John Spencer and Hank Weston.
Campaign contributions have come from Beason, Spencer and Sierra Pacific Industries, among others. Much of the contributions for both candidates come from real-estate and building interests. (see story on page A1).
Logue also has been endorsed by the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe, which lists Supervisor Ted Owens as a founding member on its Web site. His campaign contributors include Robinson Enterprises & Sons of Nevada City.
Logue's campaign committee lists a Chico post office box address. The city has been the 3rd District's GOP voting base for years and is the home of Keene, who is leaving the Assembly because of term limits.
