The Union Staff Writer Jill Bauerle will be attending the Burning Man art festival in the Nevada desert this week.
The event has grown to an expected attendance of 40,000 people this year, after starting as a beach bash of 800 revelers organized by San Francisco artists in 1986.
Sketchy network permitting, Bauerle will report on the weird, wild and wonderful in the course of the week. See her blog, The Burning Man Chronicles, online at http://community2.theunion.com/blog/?w=burningman, from virginburner (its her first time).
In addition, North San Juan resident Jane Anderson and photographer Liam Allerby also will post blogs from their camp, A Hug, as unionburner.
Heres an excerpt from Bauerles latest posting about preparations for the event:
You can't book a flight to Burning Man with the Black Rock City Travel Agency in Black Rock City, Nev.
It's a pretend travel agency, says Michael Anderson of Nevada County, one of the agency's founders.
Formed in 1996 as a support arm for the Black Rock City Airport, the travel agency's all-volunteer staff starts setting up camp two weeks before the Burning Man event...
Every year, according to Anderson, pilots are required to use a code phrase over the squawk box to inform the ground crew that they understand the landing conditions at the airport before they're given the go-ahead to land.
In 2006, the code was, I have whiskey breath.
This year, the airwaves will be filled with the catchphrase, I have pants off.
