Group pushes for emergency plans

Part of an ongoing look at emergency preparedness:

Nevada County has taken steps to prepare for crises such as a wildfire or a winter freeze - at least on paper - but it's residents are mostly ill equipped to face the emergencies, according to members of the local Citizen Corps Council.

The Citizen Corps Council is a national nonprofit that helps coordinate volunteer activities during emergencies.

"There is an office of emergency services at the Rood Center," said Robert Stanbury, chair of Nevada County Citizen Corps Council. "In case of any disaster, the office of emergency services decide how to respond to the emergency. A member of our Citizen Corps Council would be a part of (the planning). They would ask the Citizen Corps Council to coordinate volunteers in the county."

The council has a list of 65 local agencies that they can contact in a crisis, as well as emergency planning if a disaster takes place.

"The office of emergency services determine which service to call on," said Sara Morrison, member of the Nevada County Citizen Corps Council. "It would come down to the volunteer coordinator representing that agency in the Citizen Corps Council."

A number of residential areas such as Cascade Shores, Lake of the Pines, Alta Sierra and Penn Valley have a proper emergency preparedness brochure, Stanbury said.

But most Nevada County residents don't read emergency plans local agencies send out via ordinary mail, said Olivia Diaz, member of Nevada County Citizen Corps Council.

"Most local agencies don't have the money to print and do a direct mailing of their emergency plan to citizens," Diaz said.

"There needs to be more personal responsibility for your own safety and planning," Morrison said. "There is always a sense that it won't happen here."
