5 things to do today

1. Nevada City Film Festival. 30 films, both local and international, at four venues: Magic Theatre, Nevada Theatre, Miners Foundry and National Hotel. Awards ceremony is at 3 p.m. at the National Hotel. Tickets at www.nevadacityfilmfestival.com.

2. Brews, Jazz & Funk Fest at the Village at Squaw Creek. Free live music from 2 to 8 p.m. Beer sampling for $10.

3. Picnic at the South Yuba River. Go to your favorite picnic spot with your children to remember that summer is still alive and well, even though school has started.

4. Slideshow and talk of the Yunnan Province. Ginny Woods has traveled to the Yunnan Province, in the western part of China closest to Tibet and Burma, for many years. This slide show will focus on the ethnic people who live in Lijiang, such as the Naxi. Starts at 7 p.m. at North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center, the San Juan Ridge. $5 at door. 265-8141 or email ncscc@nccn.net.

5. “A Few Good Men.” Aaron Sorkin's award-winning play tells the story of a rookie JAG lawyer defending two marines accused of murdering a fellow soldier. Courtroom drama at its best, military life is examined in this show that was made into a Rob Reiner movie of the same name. Show starts at 2 p.m. $18 in advance.
