Northern Mines Business and Professional Women (NMBPW)

Northern Mines held their monthly meeting July 18. President Elect Sharon Rose introduced the guest speaker, Shawn Tuttle. Tuttle is the founder of Project Simplify; she introduced principles and strategies to organize and simplify your life. During this well attended meeting, members were guided through an exercise with a handout to use to show how to set a goal, visualize the goal, clear the way to achieving it, make plans to achieve it and "do" it.

NMBPW celebrates its 75th birthday this year. From the beginning it sought not only to expand economic opportunity for women and promote their welfare, but improve women's access to business and the professions.

Please call Valerie Logsdon at 272-7207 or Dee Eldridge at 273-0257, for further information about Northern Mines Business and Professional Women. Attend our next meeting and consider joining us.

Soroptimist International

Soroptimist International of Grass Valley is under new leadership. At a recent installation dinner, outgoing President Betty Stiving recounted the success of the past year including $25,000 earned in charitable fundraising enabling the club to provide support to our community and the international needs of women and children. Much of the fundraising results from Nevada County Fair sales of the Chicken and Vegetable Teriyaki bowls.

Local charities that are supported by Soroptimists include the KARE Crisis Nursery, DVSAC, CORR, Hope House, KARE Graduation Night activities for Bear River and Nevada Union High Schools, gifts and support for families at Christmas time, and support for women in developing countries. Members also award children who have overcome difficult situations in the Outstanding Effort Awards, and provide information and help to families through a program called Women Reaching Out. Special recognition is given to women who have made a difference in our community and scholarships provide help to women who are single heads of households who are working to improve their education.

Leading Soroptimist International of Grass Valley will be President Jeanne Aldrich, assisted by President-Elect Mary Graebner, Recording Secretary Norma Toles, Corresponding Secretary Sue Simmons, Treasurer Kathleen Mahr, and Assistant Treasurer Doris Holderbein, Delegates Diana Holcomb and Bunny Parcher, and Director Judy Leslie.

Mother Lode Toastmasters, July 23

It was another great evening! We had three wonderful speakers with three great topics. Nadine Langley's speech, A Little bit Won't Hurt You, examined the use and effects of pesticides on the food we eat; Imantz Kaupe gave a technical presentation in his speech entitled, Hubbard's Pimple, which gave us a look at the future of fossil fuel production/consumption and the use of alternative fuels. Linda Couper's winning specialty speech, The Power of Now, enlightened us on letting go of our past hurts and failures and to learn to experience the "Now." All in all it was another informative and fun evening.

We are educational, supportive and guarantee plenty of laughter. Check us out at motherlode.freetoasthost.com, or, better yet, come to a meeting. We meet Monday evenings 6:45 p.m. at 640 East Main St., Grass Valley (behind Valet Cleaners). We'll leave the door open and save you a seat!

Captain John Oldham Chapter, DAR

With a show of colonial costumes, members of the local Captain John Oldham Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) discussed the coming Constitution Day Parade in Nevada City, encouraging members to participate, at a recent meeting. The 41st Annual Constitution Day Parade will be held in Nevada City at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.

The National Society DAR was responsible for presenting the idea of a national Constitution Week September 17-23 to members of Congress and in 1955 President Eisenhower issued his proclamation. The first observance of Constitution Week was so successful that a Senate Joint Resolution was presented to the president to designate Sept. 17-23 annually as Constitution Week, which was adopted and signed into Law 915 Aug. 2, 1956.

Proclamations have been requested by the Captain John Oldham Chapter from the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, Nevada City Council and Grass Valley City Council regarding the observance of Constitution Week.
