What, or who, are those ghostly bumps in the night?

Spooky sounds have been heard by Katie Bennett at her Nevada City bed-and-breakfast ever since she took it over about five years ago.

Though it might sound absurd, Bennett said she wasn't surprised when a team of paranormal investigators said they recorded laughter and footsteps in the middle of the night recently.

"The one sound I consistently hear is laughter," Bennett said Thursday. "Usually when you hear the walking on the floor, it's accompanied by music, laughter and dancing."

Bennett thinks the noise comes from former ladies of the evening who lived in the US Hotel on Broad Street until the 1940s.

"I'm not saying I believe in all this stuff, but I am open to just about anything," Bennett said. Lights consistently go on and off without her touching them, and patrons report hearing knocks and people outside their doors, Bennett said.

Her stories were enough to attract the NorCal Paranormal Investigators from Sacramento, who took 50 hours of audio and visual tape on June 24.

They say they are skeptics and often debunk ghostly claims, but they heard plenty on the tapes of that night.

"We found some really good EVPs," or electronic voice phenomena, said investigator Shane Thornton, co-founder of the NorCal team. No images showed up on the team's cameras, however.

"The recordings include a woman laughing, a man calling out for someone named Olga, popping and knocking noises, boots walking on hardwood floors (the US Hotel is carpeted) and more," said Doug Carnahan, co-leader of the team with Thornton.

The investigators said they would soon share their discoveries with Bennett, who thinks there is nothing to fear and that her building is just one of many that are haunted in downtown Nevada City.
