Suspect arrested in murder of Grass Valley woman

A Penn Valley man will be arraigned in Nevada County Superior Court this afternoon for the alleged May 4 murder of Mariam Spratt, of Grass Valley.

Steve Medlyn, 34, remained incarcerated at 1 p.m. today with no bail at the Wayne Brown Correction Facility on suspicion of murder and burglary, according to District Attorney Cliff Newell.

Medlyn's wife, Dawn Medlyn, 37, was questioned along with her husband Thursday. But she was released pending further investigation according to Detective Sgt. Doug Hren of the Grass Valley Police Department.

Following the interviews by Hren and Detective Colin Nelson, a warrant was served at the Medlyn's residence, where Spratt's purse and other identifying items were found, Hren said.

Steve Medlyn was subsequently arrested and taken to jail. He is now accused of killing Spratt, 75, at her Empire Street apartment. Spratt appeared to be strangled with a cord of some kind according to information released in May by Grass Valley Police.

"We're happy to start getting some closure going on this, it's been too long," Hren said. "With anyone we spoke to, everything led back to them."
