Joshua Harkins
Assault victim Josh Harkins came out of his coma and is breathing on his own, his family reported Tuesday.
Harkins was hit in the right side of his head with a skateboard June 7 at Condon Park as he tried to break up a fight. He spent more than a week in an induced coma with injuries to his ear, skull and brain.
He underwent surgery last week to repair a skull fracture and subdural hematoma.
The 25-year-old woke up from the induced coma Monday morning, said his father, Dan Harkins, the same day his friends and coworkers held a spaghetti dinner benefit for him at Citizens Restaurant.
"He said 'Dad, I want to go to the spaghetti dinner,'" Dan Harkins said. "I had to tell him no, we can't!"
Harkins phoned his friends at Citizens Restaurant during the benefit and talked with them, said Carol Benish, the owner's mother. The event raised more than $5,600, she said.
Harkins hopes doctors will allow his son to walk soon.

Josh Harkins recognizes people who visit him, Dan Harkins said, including his two younger brothers who came home from Iraq after they learned of their brother's injuries.
Both Marines have to return overseas this weekend.
Although Josh Harkins can talk, his father said, he doesn't make a lot of sense yet.
"He's dazed and confused right now," Dan Harkins said, "But he's making progress and he's looking good."
It may be a few weeks before his son is released from the hospital, he said.
Dan Harkins said he is grateful to the community for donations his family has received to pay for Harkins' miscellaneous bills, which includes a $29,000 bill for his June 7 helicopter ride from Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
He also thanked emergency responders.

"We are grateful to law enforcement and the fire department for their response," Harkins said. "They were quick and caring in getting Josh the help he needed."
Patrick Cronan, 20, was arrested after witnesses allegedly told police they saw him hit Harkins as Harkins tried to intervene in a fight.
Cronan remains in jail in lieu of $75,000 bail, charged with assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury.
Cronan's preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for June 21, has been moved 9 a.m. July 10 in Nevada County Superior Court, Cronan's attorney Stephen Munkelt said Tuesday.
