A private sewer line blocked up Tuesday, spilling 1,000 gallons of effluent into Wolf Creek, the Nevada County Environmental Health Department reported.
At the corner of Bank and Tinloy streets in downtown Grass Valley, the blockage in a private sewer lateral caused effluent to overflow a cleanout, department Director Wesley Nicks wrote in a prepared statement.
"It is estimated that 1,000 gallons of effluent spilled over several hours that then entered Wolf Creek," Nicks wrote. "The City of Grass Valley contacted a private sewer contractor to clear the blockage."
The sewage may contain bacteria and other organisms that can make people and animals sick. The area should be avoided as long as warning signs are posted, Nicks wrote.
