Bear River senior Lauren Juric rises above swarming Mesa Verde players to score Thursday night at Bear River High School.
Sometimes a game against a weaker opponent is all a person needs to get back on track.
It certainly worked for Bear River's Tanya Copeland during Thursday night's matchup against a struggling Mesa Verde team. Copeland scored 12 points - including two 3-pointers in the first half - to help get herself out of a tough stretch.
Bear River (8-2 in the Pioneer Valley league, 18-7 overall) downed the Mavericks 58-34.
"I think I've been a little intimidated for the past few games," Copeland said. "I felt good out there tonight. I just felt really focused."
On a night when the rest of the Bruins struggled - Bear River finished 25 of 73 shooting on the night - Copeland was five of six from the field, including nailing two of her three 3-point attempts. The rest of the Bruins combined to go two of 21 from behind the arc.
"She played hard and did a good job out there," Bruins coach Jeff Bickmore said. "She played point guard for a while for us, too. She hadn't been shooting well for 3-pointers, so it was nice to see her hit a couple today."

With the game well under control in the second half, Copeland saw more time on the court than a typical game.
"I was really happy about that," Copeland said. "I just stayed really focused and got some pretty good looks."
Bear River started off a little sluggish. Neither team scored in the first one minute, 55 seconds of the game and in that period the Bruins missed five 3-point attempts and a two-pointer. Leading scorer Lauren Juric, who finished with 18 points, finally broke through for the Bruins and Bear River never trailed in the game.
The Bruins jumped out to a seven-point lead but then gave up two quick baskets to the Mavericks.
"Every once in a while it's nice to play one of those games you know you're going to win because you can work on some things," Bickmore said. "We didn't play as well as I would have liked defensively, but it's still a win. You hope you don't have a letdown, which I think we did a little tonight, but we won.
"We had a bad first quarter and our defense gave up a lot of easy shots, but we played hard."

In the second quarter, Mesa Verde pulled within seven with 4:39 to play before the half. The Mavericks didn't score again until 1:13 had ticked off the clock in the third quarter. The Bruins scored 11 in that span and went on an 11-1 run at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters to put the game away.
The Bruins' last regular season home game is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Whitney. The regular season ends Thursday with a bout at rival Colfax, also at 7:30 p.m.
