This weekend we're launching new features on our Opinion page and on the Web.
On the Opinion page, we're introducing two new columnists: Amy Goodman and Jonah Goldberg. We think both will provide fresh, provocative perspectives. (More about them below.)
We'll also resume writing editorials about our community, as issues arise that interest us. Next week, for example, we'll publish an editorial about the shortage of doctors in our community, highlighted in a special report yesterday by Dave Moller. As always, the editorials and columns also will appear on our Web site at www.theunion.com.
Exclusively on the Web, we're offering "Inside The Union" by multimedia reporter Jill Bauerle. Jill will provide you with behind-the-scenes interviews with our reporters and editors about our newsgathering and present them as a podcast or videocast at www.theunion.com.
This weekend Jill interviews Robyn Moormeister about her story on the prostitutes who are being sought for allegedly beating a Lake of the Pines man after a botched rendezvous. It's entertaining but also educational, such as explaining why we didn't publish the "John's" name. The podcast is available on our Web site.
In the future, Jill will interview the staff about other stories. From time to time, she also will produce a podcast of our news meeting, where editors discuss the next day's stories and their placement in the newspaper. "Inside The Union" is meant to provide readers with an inside look at our newsroom, as well as insights into community journalism.
As far as the Opinion page, we think Amy Goodman and Jonah Goldberg will provide insightful commentary.
Amy is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, a national news radio program. She also is the editor of "The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media that Love Them." Amy, an award-winning journalist, began her career in community radio in 1985. She helped launch Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now! in 1996.
"I've learned in my years as a journalist that when a politician says 'That's ridiculous' you're probably on the right track," according to Goodman.
Her coverage on the Democracy Now! Web site often leads to stories in the mainstream press in what she calls "trickle up" journalism.
Jonah is one of most prominent young conservative journalists.
He is founding editor of "National Review Online." He also served as Washington columnist for the Times of London, and he has written for the New Yorker, the Wall Street Journal and Slate.
"Goldberg brings a fresh perspective to the typical right-left debate, by rejecting party lines, talking points and stale clichés," according to Tribune Media Services. "His entertaining writing style speaks to a whole new generation."
We will continue to run columnists Molly Ivins, Cal Thomas and Thomas Elias, among others, on our Op-Ed page.
We hope you like the changes. Thanks for reading The Union and enjoy your weekend.
