It is disheartening to continually read the negative comments regarding the Nevada City Business Improvement District, including the inaccurate headline in Friday's edition of The Union.
With regard to the "24 business owners who are refusing to pay their monthly dues," the statement is not true. There are no monthly dues. It is a yearly assessment levied by the city, only a small handful of businesses have refused to pay, and the remaining outstanding invoices belong to folks that have closed their businesses and moved on.
The Nevada City Business Improvement District will be holding its 2007 Kick-Off Meeting from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at City Hall. We cordially invite the downtown community and residents to attend, and we especially encourage the membership of the BID to join its all-volunteer advisory board in addressing the scope of work for 2007.
New board members and committee members are needed, and we welcome input.
As we are committed to reviewing the fee structure for 2008, we welcome participation in this process.
It is important to remember that when new ideas are undertaken, they are often met with opposition. This was true for Grass Valley when it established its BID 20 years ago, and that organization is now recognized as a critical asset to the success of Grass Valley's businesses.
The BID will continue its positive and collaborative work with the Chamber of Commerce, The City Council and residents of Nevada City to enhance our economic vitality and quality of environment.
