Local charity wins Newman’s Own award

Women of Worth, a local charity that helps women in need get back on their feet, has received a donation of $1,500 from Newman’s Own Organics.

“This is huge for us,” charity founder Sandy Schmidt of Meadow Vista said. Schmidt has been raising money to get an office started where she can receive women who need help and have volunteers.

Paul Newman, owner of the company that donates all its profits to charity, wrote the check and sent a letter of congratulations.

The award came through Nevada City resident Kate Frame, who is national sales manager for the company.

Frame was recognized for work going “above and beyond the ordinary” to contribute to the success of the company. It is the seventh time she has been recognized by the company, according to Newman’s Own chief executive officer Peter Meehan.

The company rewarded Frame by letting her name a charitable organization to which the company would donate money. That was Women of Worth.

Schmidt founded Women of Worth in 1999 after she struggled to get a job, housing, education and care for her children in the wake of a divorce.
