Claus Sievert of Grass Valley with his tree art.
What is your career and your current job title? Artist and printmaker.
Describe in a sentence or two your art. I create hand-colored, limited edition etchings, mostly of trees and California landscapes.
How long have you been working in this discipline? I started studying art in 1970 and have worked full time since 1982 in California.

Why do you do it? I have been inspired, especially by wild places, ever since my first brief visits as an art student. I like working in a medium dating back to the 16th century. It seems to fit my subjects, and I also feel a connection to a long tradition of printmakers whose tools and technique has changed little since the days of Rembrandt.
What do you hope to accomplish? I want to share with the viewer the inspiration that motivated me to create my etchings.
Do you create your art with an exact message you want the viewer to receive and if yes, what is that message? I leave the interpretation of the images to the viewers, but I enjoy informing them about printmaking and distinguishing between original art and mass production or fakes.
Where do you want to be with your art, in terms of part time versus full-time status? I am doing this full time and feel gratitude for many years of success.

What kind of special training did you take? I spent four years studying at the art academy in Brunsvick, Germany.
What's your favorite part of your endeavors? I love to be out in nature, finding inspiring subjects and "translating" them into my art. I also enjoy the interaction with the public at art festivals.
What's your least favorite part of your endeavors? Paperwork, show applications, jurying for exhibitions, bookkeeping and taxes.
How many hours a day, or more appropriate, a week, do you spend on your work? It is hard to answer. There are so many tasks relating to this work: preparing the copper plate, drawing and etching the image, hand-printing and later painting each impression with watercolors.

Do you consider it hard work and could anyone do it? Etching is a challenging medium, requiring perseverance and patience. I am still learning after all these years.
Any other comments you'd like to include? I like to draw images that have defied the perils of time and adversity, such as beautiful, ancient trees. But I am aware that comparable circumstances in our lives would be associated with pain, injury and limitation. I love the inspiring and informative talks about my work with people from different walks of life. It is fascinating to hear what something as common as a tree means to different people.
