Participation at Draft Horse races more than doubles

Print Comment
The weather was perfect last Sunday for racing at the Draft Horse Classic 5K, 10K and kids' half mile races.

Over 226 participants ran the events on a cool morning at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, compared to 112 last year, a dramatic increase. There were 117 finishers in the 5K, 68 in the 10K and 41 in the kids' race.

There were no problems reported with the 5K course, but unfortunately due to a limitation on the streets available due to traffic control concerns, confusion about a double-loop in the 10K led some runners to go too far and others to run short, throwing the "normal" performance results out of kilter, affecting the Grand Prix series.

The top four finishers in the 5K were all from out of our area, with top Sacramento runner Dave Keane pulling away near the finish to win in 18 minutes, 48 seconds, a fast time on a hilly course. He also won the 50-59 age group (AG).

Chico's Rick Turner, winner of the 40-49 AG, was only five seconds behind in 18:53, followed by Reno's Chris Badolato (19-29 AG winner) in 20:03, an impressive performance considering he hasn't run in months due to injuries.

Badolato hangs onto his first place tie with Grass Valley's Robert Marrer as the overall top-point scorer in the Grand Prix with 66 points. Both have already won their AG Grand Prix (GP) for the year and remain undefeated in their age groups.

Marrer, second overall in the 10K in a blazing 37:55, won the 50-59 AG by more than 5 minutes.

Back in the 5K, Dixon's Greg Ngo was fourth overall while winning the 30-39 AG in 20:14 ... pushing a baby stroller the whole way!

Nevada City's B.J. Lindholm continued his outstanding year by finishing fifth overall, the first local runner, and second in the 30-39 AG in 20:21. Lindholm jumped from fourth to second in his age group of the GP, with 40 points. (Note: GP totals are unofficial, based on my calculations, but are usually correct.)

Larry Defeyter, also from Nevada City, won the 10K in 37:49, clinching first place in the GP in the 30-39 AG for the year with 55 points, and remains undefeated in his age group.

Nevada City's Sid Heaton, who placed third in the 30-39 AG and 13th overall in the 10K in 43:38, is now tied for third in the GP with Peter Lubbers, who was misdirected on the course and ran long, still taking fifth in that age group. Both have 30 points, only one behind Lindholm, with one race to go, next month's Run Through the Colors in Nevada City.

Grass Valley's Shawn Ryley ran the best race of his life and placed sixth overall in the 5K in 20:50, good for second in the 40-49 AG. Thomas McAtee, also from Grass Valley, had a strong finish to win the 13-18 AG, seventh overall, in 20:53. He has already won the 9-12 GP with 63 points.

I also ran my best race of the year to finish eighth overall and second in the 50-59 AG in 20:57. Due to Nevada City's V. Neelakantan running long on the course and not placing in his age group in the 10K, which he normally wins, combined with Grass Valley's Harry Shields winning the 40-49 AG in 40:37 (fourth overall), I dropped from second in the 40-49 GP to third.

Neelakantan, with one point for participation, clinched first place in the 40-49 GP with 53 points, followed by Shields with 41 and myself in third with 40. Yuba City's Rick Browning, fifth overall in the 10K and second in the 40-49 AG in 40:54, is fourth with 30 points.

Nevada City's Daniel Heinz ran a strong race to finish ninth overall in the 5K and second in the 13-18 AG in 21:00. He was followed by Meadow Vista's Zach Stoll in 21:08, an amazing little runner who won the 9-12 AG while finishing 10th overall.

Penn Valley's Gene Gilligan, Nevada Union's boys cross country coach, won the 60-69 AG in 21:50, 11th overall, while Nevada City's Al Shook, second in that AG, was 13th in 22:15.

Grass Valley's Jill Vahidi won the women's 5K in 22:08, good for 12th overall and first in the 30-39 AG. With the victory, Vahidi clinched first place in her GP with 53 points.

The next five women finishers were all in the 40-49 age group, which Vahidi will join next year, making it the women's age group to watch next year.

Penn Valley's Jerily McCormick, 14th overall, won the 40-49 AG in 22:20, followed by Grass Valley's Kirsten Koch in 23:06, Nevada City's Carrie Manis in 24:57 and Grass Valley's Yvonne Davidson in 25:24.

Koch holds second place in the 30-39 GP with 36 points, with Grass Valley's Heather Bullis, third in that AG in the 10K in 55:04, in third with 21. (Another runner has more points, but not enough races to qualify.)

McCormick has 51 points to lead the 40-49 GP, with Nevada City's Michelle Homan second with 41, running 52:46 in the 10K for fourth in her AG.

Grass Valley's Lynne Hurrell remained undefeated in her 70 and over AG, running 27:45 (41st overall, 5K). Her 66 points are tied with Nevada City's Carly Brush, who won the 19-29 AG in the 10K in 49:03 (30th overall) for the top women's GP point scorer for the year. Both have already secured the Grand Prix title in their respective age group.

Grass Valley's Pam Coon had been in a three-way tie for first, but in one of the big upsets of the year, finished second in the 50-59 AG to Grass Valley's Lori Wisniewski in the 5K, who won the age group for the first time by only five seconds, 26:16 to 26:21.

Coon has already won the 50-59 GP for the year with 63 points, and now, Wisniewski, with a fine race, has locked in second place with 47.

Other Grass Valley age group winners in the 5K were Laurie Goodnight (19-29, 26:12), Ashley Davies (13-18, 29:23, already having won her GP), Callan Warner (8 and under, 30:49), Elaine Sierra (60-69, 31:35, 2nd in her GP with 41 points to Mary McLean's 44), Kate Berreman (8 and under, 31:43, already won her GP with 52 points), and Robert Lowenthal (70 and over, 33:00, third in the GP with 28 points).

Nevada City's Dori Anderson won the 9-12 age group in 26:33 (36th overall).

Other top local finishers in the 10K not already mentioned were Cedar Ridge's Travis Piandall (3rd overall, 13-18 AG winner, 40:24), Grass Valley's Dean Garcia (8th overall, 2nd 30-39, 42:36), and Nevada City's Mike Rodriguez (10th overall, 2nd 50-59, 42:58).

Yuba City's Ken Gaal won the 60-69 AG 10K in 42:58 (9th overall) to remain undefeated in his age group and win his GP with 55 points.

Nevada City's Gretchen Chaney won the women's 10K in 43:30 (1st 30-39 AG, 12th overall).

Auburn's Nichole Tintle was second female in 45:43 (19th overall), winning the 13-18 AG and clinching at least a tie for first in that GP with 55 points.

Nevada City's Abby Hunter was 3rd woman in 47:16 (27th overall, 2nd 30-39), followed by Carly Brush (already mentioned) and Lori Eden in 49:31 (31st overall, first 40-49).

Other AG winners were The Union sports reporter, Jeff Miller (19-29, 44:34, 14th overall), Grass Valley's Nathan Ferguson (9-12, 46:22, 21st overall) and Judith Mays (50-59, 56:43), Oregon House's Herman Lubbers (70 and over, 65:01) and Nevada City's Marion Linden (60-69, 65:28).
