Be part of the solution: On Saturday night you can hear a jam-packed Blues Extravaganza at The Center for the Arts and at the same time help the Recovery Alumni Association. The alumni are the people who have successfully kicked their drug habit and are working to help others in this community get off drugs. This concert is a benefit for that group and a great cause. The people in the association are making it "cool" to be in recovery! But it takes money to provide programs and house recovering addicts until they can get on their feet. Please support this grassroots effort. Even if you don't want to attend the concert ($12 now; $15 at the door) buy a ticket to help these amazing people continue their work in Nevada County. They're available at The Center, or buy calling 273-9541. For more info call Angel at 274-7561.

Know about 'cutter bees'? Reader Pat Hays shares her frustration with the little pests. "I wonder if anyone else in our beautiful Nevada County has had the problem we are having. We have hoards of 'cutter bees' as the pest control company called them. They have all but destroyed our English Laurel all around our house. We had the pest control company look for their nest(s) to no avail. They sprayed and we have tried various sprays for wasps, etc., which the bees are impervious to. Their nests are made in holes in the ground, rocks, rotted trees, etc. They are not as visible as other types of bees' nests, therefore very hard to locate. They seem smaller than wasps and are not aggressive. Anyone out there have this experience and found a solution? Help!!"
Margie Miller's art: Will be on display at the Nevada City Winery beginning tonight as part of the winery's "Artist of the Month" program. Tonight is also the Art Walk in Nevada City from 5 to 7 p.m. and shops displaying art will be open until 9 p.m. Margie is the mentor of Roxie Ford, the talented teenager who was "Artist of the Month" in July.
Sierra Starr Winery turns 10: And to celebrate, Phil Starr and family invite you to their Tasting Room today and Saturday. The fun starts at 6 p.m. and Phil (5-Starr Tractor Guy) and Anne (Sirius Sipper) and son Jack will be pouring and introducing themselves. And, in the interest of full disclosure, I went to Whittier High School with Phil about 30 million years ago!
