The Holiday Inn Express hotel under construction on Bank Street, Grass Valley.
The historic Holbrooke Hotel and the Holiday Inn Express under construction in downtown Grass Valley are sharing the same management team.
Mike Nudelman, part owner and managing partner at the Holbrooke said Friday that Destination Properties will manage both entities, who look to share business in the expanding downtown market. Destination Properties manages five hotels in Auburn, Placerville, Sacramento and now Nevada County.
"The Holbrooke will be the preferred caterer, providing most of their food," Nudelman said. "With 7,000 square feet of meeting space (at the Holiday Inn) we're looking forward to them bringing in business, travelers, conventions and events."

"We have a lot of bookings already, and we needed a partner for catering and food and (guest) overflow," Nick Hayhurst, the developer of the Holiday Inn Express, said Friday. "We had to make sure we had catering covered."
Hayhurst said the management team started Aug. 1. He hopes to open the new Holiday Inn Express on Bank Street between Christmas and February. In-house design improvements for the hotel and its four tenants have slowed the project, Hayhurst said.
Tenants at the hotel will include a high-end delicatessen-cafe with limited seating, a UPS store, a Network Real Estate office, a spa, and a kiosk inside the building where chocolates will be sold, Hayhurst said.

Nudelman said the Holbrooke remains independently and locally owned. Area resident Jered Gettler, who started at the hotel in his teens, remains as chef, Nudelman said.
Hayhurst said the size of the Holiday Inn project has also been a factor in its slow development. Demolition of old downtown buildings for the project began two years ago.
Hayhurst later ran into a lengthy adjacent land purchase, and a wet spring this year, which postponed construction.

Nudelman and James O'Brien, both of Nevada City, bought the Holbrooke last summer from Matt and Donna Weaver for around the $2.35 million asking price. Nudelman is a retired lawyer and O'Brien a former human resources executive originally from the Bay Area.
Destination Properties is run by Michael Bullis, who once ran a large hotel management company that included the Disneyland Hotel, The Claremont Resort hotel in Oakland and the Los Angeles Biltmore.
