Briefs

Road work on Neal Street planned

On Tuesday evening, Neal Street will be closed between South Auburn and Mill streets in downtown Grass Valley.

A water service line ruptured earlier this month and the emergency repair left steel plates on the street.

A city public works crew will be repairing the hole and repaving the street between 6 p.m. and midnight.

On Aug. 25, the No Host Bar at the Elks Lodge - as a part of the fundraising - will start at 5 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6. This will be followed by the silent auction.

Fairgrounds offers escape from heat

The Nevada County Fairgrounds received orders from the governor's office Wednesday to provide a cool place for people who might want to avoid the scorching outdoor temperature, said Ed Scofield, the manager at the fairgrounds.

"For the next two days, we are suggesting they (people wanting a cool spot) go to the community center, if they want to get out of the heat," Scofield said. "The community center is air-conditioned. There is no service out there - no food or anything like that - but it is a cool building."

The community center is located on the south side of the fairgrounds, off of McCourtney Road, near Gate 3. Those at the grounds who might have questions about the center, can call the fairgrounds office at 273-6217.
