The Nevada County Department of Environmental Health announced that a sewage spill occurred at Lake Wildwood Friday, within the cove near Chaparral Circle.
It is estimated, according to the department, that 50-100 gallons of untreated effluent overflowed a manhole and entered the lake.
According to the department's report, sanitation employees were working on a generator, when circuit breakers tripped causing a backup that overflowed a nearby manhole.
The environmental health department described the health threat as "low" and advised people to avoid the immediate area of the spill. Sewage that was discharged may contain bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms that can cause illness in humans and animals.
The department also suggests that care should be taken to prevent human and pet-animal contact with the sewage-contaminated area, as long as warning signs are posted.
