Nevada City Planning Commissioner Sheila Stein announced her candidacy Thursday for City Council.
"It's a great honor to serve on the planning commission," Stein said. "I've learned a lot in the process. I believe my hands-on experience with our General Plan, Zoning Ordinance and other regulations will ensure Nevada City voters of a seamless transition from the commission to the council."
Stein, a resident of Nevada City for more than 15 years, supports efforts to retain the community's unique historical features. But she also wants to ensure, as a councilor, that future economic and social needs are approached with an eye for improving basic public services.
"I love this town and I have no interest in changing it," she said. "But we are a 19th century community with an infrastructure that needs 21st century attention."
In particular, Stein emphasizes the need for improvement of many streets and sidewalks. She also thinks that water pressure in some neighborhoods falls far short of what citizens expect and deserve.
"In our race toward the future, we must also provide citizens with essential daily services," she said. "As decision makers, we need to keep in mind that Nevada City is more than the historic district. As beautiful as (the) downtown is, and as important as it is for the economic vitality of the city treasury, we must find a way to come to grips with the deteriorating streets and sidewalks in the neighborhoods that residents have to deal with on a daily basis."
Stein wants to see Nevada City flourish both for its business owners and residents.
"This is a beautiful place," she said. "I want to do what I can to make certain we retain a community spirit that makes people proud to live, learn, work and play here. There's no reason why we can't promote our history, bolster our economy, and provide our residents with the kind of services they deserve. We just need to work together and understand our various priorities."
Stein, a mother of two teenagers, is a mortgage broker. She is also a past president of the Nevada City Parent Teacher Club, a former Girl Scout Leader and a Court Appointed Special Advocate.
