Why when the vice president shoots someone it's news

I'm amazed that there's people out there who think the media is piling on when it reports that the vice president of the United States shoots someone, even if it was accidentally. Of course, since the initial reports we've learned Vice President Cheney didn't follow the law since he was hunting without the appropriate hunting stamp. But who cares? It's only the law, right? Now, we're finding out that the man who was shot suffered a heart attack, which doctors are saying is a direct result of getting shot. But who cares? It's only a heart attack, right? Maybe I have an old-fashion view of what constitutes news. But I really do believe that it is newsworthy when someone gets shot, is hospitalized, suffers a heart attack and the shooter violates a state law. Of course, when the shooter is one of the most powerful and influential men in the world, that makes it even more newsworthy. What's so hard to understand about that?
