A 20-year-old Grass Valley man was seriously injured Sunday while serving with the United States Army in Afghanistan.
Nevada Union High School graduate Noah Bailey reportedly lost part of his leg and his foot in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan Sunday.
Bailey's parents John and Rebecca Callahan of Grass Valley received the news Sunday morning while Bailey underwent surgery on his leg at the U.S. Military hospital in Landsthul, Germany.
"He's alive but he's seriously hurt," John Callahan said Sunday afternoon. "Pray for him."
News reports confirm a Chinook went down north of Kandahar, injuring five U.S. soldiers. All were evacuated to a medical facility and are listed in stable condition. The Chinook sustained severe damage in the crash, officials said.

"He's a good kid," Callahan said. "We're trying to handle this within the family."
Bailey played football and was a pole vaulter for track and field at Nevada Union High School. He graduated in 2003.
Shortly after graduation, Bailey entered basic training at the U.S. Army Infantry School in fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
Friends of Nevada County Military founder Fred Buhler said Bailey is "an exceptionally nice kid," and that his prayers are with Bailey's family.
