I am a family physician. I am not on the payroll of Planned Parenthood or any other abortion provider. I just take care of patients in the real world.
I urge a No vote on Prop. 73 in the upcoming special election.
When I read this proposition, I could not understand why anyone would want to put young women in danger by requiring parental notification in all cases of abortion. In my experience, it is very rare for a teen to get an abortion without one of the parents being aware. The very few girls who cannot tell parents have very good reasons, for instance, a history of physical abuse by their parents.
Then I read the proposition further. Why would they want to put doctors in jail for caring for patients? Why keep a list of how individual judges rule on giving young women permission to proceed with abortions? It seems unlikely that any court would let these provisions stand. It became clear to me that the proponents were trying to pick another fight in the courts.
Let's save the headache of another strident and ultimately futile court battle to limit abortion rights. Vote no on 73.
