HAMS and guns

In the midst of all the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina, two things have surfaced that might not have been noticed in all the turmoil:

America's amateur radio hobbyists (HAMS) have once again come to the fore, providing a voice link to areas where cell and land-line phone equipment were destroyed. The expected demise of the HAMS network, projected a few years ago, appears to have been somewhat exaggerated.

The Second Amendment also seems to have some life left in it as property owners in the devastated areas, where law and order have broken down, take to "bearing arms" to protect home and family. Sometimes the threat of the smell of gunsmoke is all that will keep the spoilers at bay. (And you don't think such a circumstance can happen here? Can you say "forest fire" or "earthquake?")
