Sunday, the Nevada County Concert Band will perform its 24th annual Picnic Pops concert at Pioneer Park, the second in a series of three outdoor concerts.
The theme is "You Must Remember This," and the band's conductor, Cheryl Baker, says, "Musical selections will bring back wonderful memories of our past. For example, we are playing a medley called "Twentiana" that includes "I'm Looking Over a 4-Leaf Clover," "Bye, Bye Blackbird," and the "Charleston."
Other items on the playlist are medleys of music by the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, of TV theme songs and Civil War tunes - something for all ages.
This nonprofit volunteer band is known for bringing free musical events to the Nevada City/Grass Valley area. Baker has invited members of other community concert bands from Northern California to join with the band for a whole day of music. Musicians representing bands from San Francisco to Sutter Creek are participating, swelling the concert's number of musicians to more than 70. After a day of rehearsals and picnicking, the concert starts at 5 p.m.
