The Grass Valley Rotary Club recently announced the winners of its 2005 Community Awards. The winners and categories are:
Combating Substance Abuse in Youth: Judy East, counselor and assistant principal, Lyman Gilmore Middle School; Christopher "Chris" Bock, foster parent; Gordon Sakaue, teacher, Lyman Gilmore Middle School.
Bill Schultz Community Award: Joan Lancaster, board member of Habitat for Humanity, League of Women Voters and Soroptimists International; Brad Miller, M.D., medical director, Hospice of the Foothills; Zaida Petievich, community volunteer; Marion Becker, retired public health nurse; Lily Marie Mora, shepherd for those with mental illness.
Vocational Service: Nevada County Information General Service Department; Dave Lawell, teacher, Vocational Academy, Lyman Gilmore Middle School; Alan Barros, student, NUHS Partnership Academy; Evan Helman, student, NUHS Partnership Academy.
Awards will be presented at the 3rd Annual Community Barbecue Friday, July 29, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, between 5 and 9 p.m. Dancing, live entertainment, children's activities and great drawing prizes are also on the agenda.
Rotarians are encouraging friends and supporters of the winners to come and cheer them on, showing how much these hard-working members of our community are appreciated.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children 4 to 10. Children under 3 are free. Tickets are available at the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce and any Citizen's Bank.
