What is your career and your current job title? Producer, cinematographer, editor, effects, music composer, graphic artist, Webmaster, photographer - I currently wear all of these hats.
Describe your art in a sentence or two. I just finished my first independent film, a feature-length documentary titled "The Phoenix Lights" and I am currently developing a feature film with my wife, Fran.
How long have you been working in this discipline? My production company, Steve Lantz Productions, LLC, is just over a year old, but my experience in independent film and video production spans over 25 years.
Why do you do it?> I enjoy the adventure of it all. Every project is unique. You never know where you will be next and who (or what) will be in front of your camera lens. I enjoy the camaraderie of my fellow crew, meeting new people, traveling and the excitement of seeing my work on a big screen.

What do you hope to accomplish? To become a successful filmmaker/story teller and to have fun along the way.
Do you create your art with an exact message you want the viewer to receive and if yes, what is that message? My first film, titled "The Phoenix Lights" has many powerful messages about alien contact and the mass sighting that occurred over Phoenix in 1997. My hope is that the film will help shed more light on a topic that has been dismissed and ridiculed for far too long. We need to take the subject of alien contact more seriously. It is not impossible as so many insist. The universe is vast, wondrous and full of mystery - anything is possible!
Where do you want to be with your art, in terms of part-time versus full-time status? I like to think of myself as working part time rather than full time. I was extremely busy with "The Phoenix Lights" as I had to wear most of the hats. On our next project, I will only operate "A" camera and score the music. It's a relief to know I won't have to work as hard as I did on the documentary. Ultimately, I would like to balance my time equally between work, family and hobbies.
Where are your works seen? I hope that the films I work on will be successfully distributed into worldwide theatrical and broadcast markets.

What kind of special training did you take? I studied at Arizona State University for two years and received my B.A. degree in professional photography and motion picture production at Brooks Institute of Photography in 1985. Two years later, I worked for Continental Camera Systems and Astrovision, Inc., where I had the privilege of working with specialized equipment such as the Pogocam and aerial camera systems designed exclusively for helicopters and Lear jets.
What's your favorite part of your endeavors? There is nothing quite like sitting in a darkened theater with hundreds of people and seeing my work presented on a big screen.
What's your least favorite part of your endeavors? Having too much to do in too little time - major stress!
How many hours a day, or more appropriate, a week, do you spend on your work? Varies from busy to insane. I don't have the luxury of working full days. I generally only have relatively small blocks of time to work as the rest of my time is spent running my kids to school, Aikido, dentists, doctor appointments etc. not to mention all of the other things life throws at me on a daily basis.

Do you consider it hard work and could anyone do it? It is very specialized work that requires training and practical experience. It's not for everyone, but there are certainly many job titles to choose from. Some jobs are easier than others. The hardest job is finding work. When I first started out in the business, after graduating from Brooks, I had a tough time finding steady work. That's why I now produce my own projects.
