With warm weather here, it’s time once again to make your outdoor rooms and decks ready for summer. If you listen closely, you just might hear the sound of power washers revving up to remove the remnants of winter from old wood decks. The time honored custom of replacing loose and splintered deck boards, retrieving the sander from storage, donning knee pads and preparing to stain and seal those wood decks can be a dreaded yearly chore.
When you are finally tired of this routine, fi nd your way to Meek’s, The Builders Choice, where they offer composite decking materials that will shorten that “to do” list and get you back into your comfortable lounge chair fast. Composite decking, you might have heard of it under different names: Rhino Deck, Trex, Monarch or maybe Weather Best. These composite decking materials are a mixture of recycled wood and plastic. The wood used to create these new products may have come from wood shavings or sawdust, while the plastic might be recycled bottles. The marriage of these two ingredients results in a decking material that boasts, no painting, staining or splintering. You can fi nally feel comfortable that little toes are safe from splinters “The wood industry has responded to the needs of builders and consumers by creating products that look and act like old growth timber.
For instance, composite decking is cost effi cient, environmentally friendly, and as an added bonus for the homeowner, maintenance friendly,” says John Farley, Meek’s Branch Manager “The timber industry has changed. Old growth trees are not as available as they once were,” Farley added. Old growth timber is characterized by tightly spaced growth rings, commonly known as grain. If your home was built 40 years ago, it’s a good bet that the boards are from old growth timber. Cut one of those boards and compare the grain to a new board. The difference in grains tells the story of why composite and engineered woods are the material for today and the future.
“These new, innovative products, such as composite decks have the look and feel and beauty of natural wood and are easier to maintain. Engineered wood, on the other hand, as in the huge beams used to construct open beamed ceilings, still have many of the same qualities of old growth timber. They are strong and straight, but lighter weight and easier to handle. This insures lower labor cost and less wasted material,” says Farley.
“Composite Decking material is maintenance friendly. It is not maintenance free, but very low maintenance. When installed properly an infrequent cleaning with soap and water may be all that are needed. The manufacturer’s took a lot of the work that is associated with wood decks and removed it from the equation,” Farley added.
Are you are thinking of replacing your home’s outdoors siding? “Hardie siding products hold paint four to five times longer then wood. Think of the savings in maintenance cost alone,” Farley said. As you start your spring-cleaning wouldn’t it be nice if you only needed a hose and some soap and water to clear out those winter blues. Nevada County residents, you can be freed from some of those mundane outdoor chores. With these new products, you will no longer be caught scrapping wood decks or replacing split and twisted boards.
You might just want to visit Meek’s The Builders Choice. Meek’s has products that can cut your “to do” list down to a reasonable size, which leaves more time for fun in the sun in Nevada County. And of course, that lounge chair…
