The 70th birthday of world-renowned composer and Nevada County resident Terry Riley will be celebrated June 11 by a special performance of the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet.
Kronos is an acclaimed classical quartet whose many accomplishments include a Grammy for "Best Chamber Music Performance" in 2004 and "Musicians of the Year" in 2003 from Musical America.
The performance by Kronos Quartet will be the opener of Music in the Mountain's Summer Fest. The Kronos show will consist of seven compositions - six in the early part of the program and one after the intermission.
Four of the compositions are by Terry Riley, including: "Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector," "Venus Upstream from Sun Rings," "One Earth, One People, One Love from Sun Rings," and "The Cusp of Magic," featuring special guest pipa player, Wu Man.
The other three compositions arranged by Stephen Prutsman are: "Wa Habibi," a traditional song; "Aha gédawo," composed by Gétatchéw Mékarya; and "Flugufrelsarinn" (The Fly Freer), composed by the band Sigur Ros.
"Sun Rings" is 10-movement composition featuring sounds of space recorded by NASA.
Tickets for the performance range from $16 to $28. Table seats on the floor in the AA section are $28, seats in the A tier is $24, in the B tier tickets are $20, and chairs in the C section are $16. Youth tickets, for ages 17 and younger, will be $5 in any section.
