The family of Phillip G. McCully remembered him Friday as a loving family man and country music devotee.
McCully, 65, of Penn Valley, was identified as the man who was killed in an unusual dump truck accident Thursday near Lake Wildwood. Services for McCully are pending.
"He was a loving father to many people and loving husband to his wife," said son Ira McCully of Sacramento.
The Nevada County Sheriff's Office said an investigator from California Occupational Safety and Health Administration was sent to the scene after McCully looked under the raised bed of the truck and it collapsed on him, crushing his head.
McCully, an independent hauler, had just dumped rock at a home construction site in the 20000 block of Wildwood West Drive across Pleasant Valley Road from Lake Wildwood.
The sheriff's office said Cal/OSHA will determine the physical cause of the accident, but the official cause of death was blunt trauma to the head.
Construction worker Ryan Hughes said Thursday that it appeared McCully was driving an older truck and the hydraulic system that raised and lowered the bed was defective.
Workers said McCully got his truck stuck on a slope after he dropped his load of rock. They said he got out of the truck, looked under the bed to view his tires, and was crushed by the falling truck bed.
He is survived by his wife, Bonita McCully.
His son Michael said country music was in Phillip McCully's heart.
"He touched many people with his gift of music," Michal McCully said. "Anyone who knew him would know he would love to hear their gift of music on his passage to see Johnny (Cash), Waylon (Jennings) and the boys."
Michael lives in Grass Valley, and Phillip McCully's third son, James, lives in Roseville.
