The day began with perfect running conditions as the sky was cloudy and the temperature was cool. And just like that, conditions went from good to bad to worse.
What made matters even more difficult was that Nevada Union was running in the last race, at which point, the course was three to four hours beyond ideal conditions and 2,000 runners has already made their way through the course.
"The field was pretty beat up and filled with puddles and it was pretty clear we needed to focus on our footing and putting forth our best effort," head coach Sara Freitas said. "At the starting line, there was a dead calm in the air and then during the course of the race the wind changed direction 180 degrees. So much so that our shelter lifted off the ground and flew 50 feet into the air. The girls finished the race running dead into the wind."
Despite these less-than-ideal conditions, four of the team's seven runners finished with personal records.
Most impressive of the personal records was that of junior Lucie McKirdy, who beat her old time by four seconds to cross the line in 20 minutes, 35 seconds. In her last race, McKirdy collapsed on the finish line after pushing her self to exhaustion.
"She was in pain for days after that race," Freitas said. "Her last race played through her mind and you could tell she was struggling to decide how much faster she could go."
Freshman Laura Rodrigues bested her former time by 73 seconds as she took 20:12 to finish the course, with most of her speed coming in the final mile of the 3.1 mile or 5K course.
Senior Shannon Buckley, who struggled to break the 20-minuet barrier all season, finally did in her last meet, coming in at 19:58, a personal record by 12 seconds.
Hannah Harrison, a sophomore, came in five seconds behind Buckley, beating her former record by 37 seconds.
While she didn't beat her own record, the Miners' No. 1 runner, Shannon Lingo, paced the team with a time of 19:50.
"This team has been without last year's No. 2 and 3 runners for much of the season and that has been difficult to overcome," Freitas said. "I'm so proud of how they rallied together, each in their own way, to add to team and bring the team back to a section contender and state meet participating team.
"It really exemplifies who they are individually. They don't give up and were a really special team."
