What is your career and your current job title? I am a printmaker. I began my career as an art teacher in Germany and became a full-time artist in 1981. I met my wife, Marti, at my first California art festival in Sausalito, 1982, and became a U.S. citizen in September of 2001.
Describe your art in a sentence or two. Limited-edition etchings that I individually hand color. My subject matter and love is ancient trees, especially in wilderness areas, and natural landscapes in general.
How long have you been working in this discipline? Since my first solo show in l975. I learned etching in art college in Brunswick, Germany, in 1971. As a teacher, I taught not only printmaking but art history, advertising design and visual communication.
Why do you do it? Because I like etching as a technique and the detail I can achieve with an etching needle. I like the tradition of the craft, which has seen little change in 400 years.
What do you hope to accomplish? To be able to make a living of course, and to inspire people to collect and enjoy my work and feel the same respect for trees and nature that I do.
What kind of special training did you take? If none, how did you learn the art techniques or processes? Basic training in art college in Germany, then the experience of working with printmaking materials every day in my studio.
What's your favorite part of your endeavors? To pull the first proof of a newly etched plate. There's so little contrast while working on the etching plate, I really only see the defined results with the first printed impression.
What is your least favorite part of your endeavor? I hate any kind of bookkeeping chore with a passion.
How many hours a day or, if more appropriate, a week do you spend on your work? Every day, all day. Even when I'm not in the studio, I'm thinking about projects, dreaming of new images of trees and landscapes.
Any other comments you'd like to include? I'm part of the Open Studios Art Tour, with the second weekend coming up Saturday and Sunday. My studio is below Grass Valley at 16524 Auburn Road, just a half mile from Highway 49. I'm also available by appointment at 273-0237.
