'Name that tune' added to band's summer concert

Nevada County Concert Band's first summer picnic pops concert Sunday has a new feature, i.e. a game show format similar to "Name That Tune" for the audience to play.

With a theme of "Comin' 'Round the Mountain," concert repertoire will include "Black Horse Troop March," "Light Calvary March," "I've Been Working on the Railroad" and "Pick-a-Train, Pick-a-Track." The band will premiere an 1861 Civil War version of the "Star Spangled Banner;" an ensemble of Low Brass including Euphoniums and Tubas will be featured in "Camptown Basses."

Cheryl Baker conducts the 45 members in the volunteer band; Jim Kerr of radio station KNCO is the emcee.

In keeping with the theme, the music organization will recognize the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum's first anniversary. "Game" prizes will be provided by the railroad museum.

Also on Sunday, 10 Emil and Hulda Stern $400 youth music scholarships will be awarded to pre-high school students. The scholarship fund has supported youth for more than 15 years, providing a total of about $40 thousand to Nevada County music students. This year's Stern scholarship recipients are Stephen Cobbe, Philip DiLeo, Daniel Goodnow, Flannery Hild, Matt Hysell, Carly Koontz, DJ Oustayan, Alicia Parker, Joe Perna and Sage Po.
