Drooling Dog BBQ
Doug & Linda Mason, proprietors
212 N. Canyon Way, Colfax (near the east-bound I-80 onramp.) 530-346-8883 OR 1-877-33-1BONE (Call for take-out orders.) Open Thursday thru Monday 11a.m. to 8 p.m.
Over the past few years there has been an influx of new restaurants in the area, and now there is a good choice for almost every type of cuisine (if you include Auburn).
What is still sorely lacking in the area is a real New York style deli and a place to get real Texas style barbecue. I'm a Texas boy who knows and appreciates good barbecue and while there are several restaurants locally that feature ribs, there has never been a restaurant solely dedicated to barbecue with a large smoker slow-cooking all day.
Thanks to a referral, we discovered a barbecue lover's dream in Colfax near the I-80 east bound onramp. Doug and Linda Mason opened up the Drooling Dog last January. Their initial goal was to operate a catering business, but they later decided to expand the operation into a restaurant.
Fran stopped by on her way back from Sacramento and brought home a menu. I was beyond excitement as I read through the menu, which can also be viewed online at www.droolingdogbarbq.com. I couldn't wait to grab the kids and speed off to the Drooling Dog. (We left skid marks on the driveway.)
We practically blew the front door off the hinges and ordered a sample of everything on the menu. Soon we were presented with a platter of perfection.
The ribs are so tender, the meat falls off the bone. The barbecue sauce is sweet and tangy with a hint of raspberry that is out of this world. Trust me, if you like ribs, you will definitely want to make the drive to Colfax and experience these yourself.
The barbecued chicken is tender and delicious and cooked without barbecue sauce (the best way). The sauce is served on the side, as it should be.
Sandwich selections include roasted garlic tri tip, barbecued sliced pork and shredded chicken on a soft roll with a small side. Dinners include your choice of ribs, chicken, tri tip and pork in various amounts and combinations.
If you call in advance, you also have several additional menu options including smoked salmon with roasted garlic blue cheese butter, prime rib, roasted turkey and roasted pork tenderloin with a mandarin chili glaze.
Sides include fresh baked cornbread and rolls, cole slaw, spring green salad, potato salad (with eggs), baked barbecue beans and garlic roasted potatoes with whole roasted garlic cloves.
The Drooling Dog is "howling good" and great for takeout. Needless to say, we are hopelessly hooked. If you love real Texas style smoked barbecue as much as we do, your dream is now a reality.
Steve and Fran Lantz of Grass Valley love to eat out. Contact them c/o The Union, 464 Sutton Way, Grass Valley 95945.
