Bill Lewis of Applegate plays the disc golf course in Grass Valley's Condon Park frequently.
Last weekend, all of his practice rounds paid off.
Lewis won the M-2 intermediate amatuer division of the Sky Catz Spectacular with four round of 6-under-par. The title came in his first try in disc golf competition.
The tournament hosted 416 disc golfers in 10 divisions, some golfers among the best in the world. Lewis won his division by throwing an even-par round at Condon, then a 7-under round, followed by an even-par round at Gateway Park in Penn Valley and a 1-over-par to finish out his championship.
"I play Condon every day, so it was a little easier there," Lewis said. "Penn Valley's course has tighter fairways, less skips with your disc, so it makes for longer putts. But it was four good rounds."
Lewis said it was his putting that made his championship possible, as he sank numerous 50- and 60-foot putts during Sunday's final day of competition.
"On the first hole, the pin was on the top of a hill about 75 feet away," Lewis said. "I just pumped it in for par and got a deuce on it. Putts like that saved me."
