Disc Golfers from western Nevada County held their own against the some of best the sport had to offer at the Sky Catz Spectacular last weekend.
The inaugural two-day event, which was held at Condon Park in Grass Valley and the Hanging Oaks Disc Golf Course at Gateway Park in Penn Valley, hosted 416 of the top professional and amateur disc golfers from 15 states.
Grass Valley's Goeff Lissaman took second place - and $1,900 - in the pro mens division to lead the local charge.
Lissaman, whose twin brother Johnny took second in the Pro Masters (40+) class, finished five strokes behind ten-time Professional Disc Golf Association champ Ken Climo of Clearwater, Fla.
Seth Reader, of Nevada City, finished in a four-way tie for sixth to pocket $600.
"Seth was playing (in the) advanced (division) then got bumped up to the pros at the end of last year and hasn't missed a beat. He's finished in the money the last couple of tournaments he's played," said Sky Catz Disc Golf Club president and tournament organizer Mike Woodman.
North San Juan's Jason Herm, and Ray Johnson of Grass Valley finished tied with three other players for 12th place.
In the women's pro division, Grass Valley's Leslie Harris came from the back of the pack in the final nine-hole playoff round to take second behind traveling tour pro Lesli Herndon.
Harris, the Sky Catz's vice president, won $650.
Nevada City's Michael Travers took second in the Grand Masters (50+) division.
Jason Baehr and Gregg Barsby, both of Grass Valley, took second and third respectively in the advanced division.
"We were really pleased the way the whole event turned out. It was our first (tournament), and we learned a lot. We're definitely going to do it again next year. Hopefully, it'll be bigger and better," Woodman said.
