Some of the top disc golfers in the nation - if not the world - will descend on western Nevada County when the First Annual Sky Catz Spectacular & Car Show tees off Saturday.
The two-day event, which will be held in Grass Valley at Condon Park and in Penn Valley's Hanging Oak course at Gateway Park, will boast more than 100 of the top-rated disc golfers.
The professionals will play in Penn Valley Saturday, and then switch to Condon Park Sunday.
At the end of play Sunday, a final nine holes will be played for at Hanging Oak to determine the women's and men's professional championship.
"We've got a pretty good handful of traveling-tour disc golfers, which is nice for our first tournament. Because usually what traveling pros do is set their schedule up the year before so they can get their sponsors and everything (else together)," professional female disc golfer and Sky Catz Disc Golf Club Vice President Leslie Harris said.
"Quite a few of them made it work out in their schedules to come and play this tournament. So it's going to be a pretty exciting event," Harris added.
Floridian Ken Climo, who owned the the Professional Disc Golf Association's open class championship trophy from 1990 to 1998, and then won the title again in 2000, will look to lead the pack.
Ron Russell - also out of the Sunshine State - who broke Climo's nine-year title run with an open class crown in 1999, and defending PDGA champ Cameron Todd of Georgia will also be among the field's top guns.
California's top-rated disc golfer, Geoff Lissanan of Grass Valley, will lead a local contingent, who will hope to keep the trophy in town.
Sky Catz President Mike Woodman said while he and the club knew it wouldn't be easy to get their event on the jam-packed PDGA National Super Tour, it was tops on their list.
The Sky Catz had to guarantee a $7,000 professional purse and show each of the 250-plus participants were dues-paying members, along with a list of other things to the PDGA to get sanctioned.
"It's tough to get into the schedule because there are so many events that are pre-existing and kinda have their niche already. But one of our club goals was to put on a super tour event," Woodman said.
Harris said those disc golfers who decided to make the trip to the area will be rewarded with two of the most challenging - and rewarding - courses in Northern California.
"Condon Park has a lot of nice tight fairways that require a high level of skill. Instead of wide open fairways, trees and manzanita (bushes) line the fairways. There are plenty of obstacles to maneuver around, and that's one of the special features we have," Harris said.
Woodman said Hanging Oak has a different feel, but won't be a cake walk.
"Hanging Oak's holes are more wide open, so it gives the challenge of the distance shot. With Penn Valley, there's a mixture of both the technical and wide open shot," Woodman said.
Spectators of the free event will also be treated to disc golf clinics, a classic car show, an assortment of food vendors, roaming entertainment as well as a concert featuring the Bandana Blues Band and Mick Martin & The Blues Rockers.
