Briana Thomas' stellar prep hoops career came to an end at the Optimist girls all-star basketball game in Sacramento Saturday.
The 2002 Sierra Foothill League most valuable female basketball player, who also lettered in volleyball and track and field the past two years for Bear River, scored one point for the south team in a 59-49 loss.
The Air Force Academy-bound post joined Forest Lake Christian's Braeden Huusfeldt (volleyball, basketball, softball) and Katelyn Gilfillan (volleyball, basketball, soccer) as the only western Nevada County prep athletes to play in the postseason in three different sports.
Barbara Schaefer of Grass Valley won the 2002 International Sled Dog Racing Association world title and is flying to Portland, Maine to collect her rewards Saturday.
Schaefer took the title in the six-dog mid-distance class. Mid distance is 20-25 miles.
Schaefer will be honored at the association's annual awards banquet.
Joining Schaefer will be Kathy Miyoshi, also of Grass Valley.
Miyoshi will be collecting the bronze medal in the six-dog mid-distance class.
Hollie McGovern usually plays dirty. That is she competes in cyclo-cross, a blend of bicycling and cross-country running while carrying her bike over obstacles.
McGovern, a 28-year-old Nevada County rider, took time from her training schedule to race in the Nevada City Classic Sunday and took 24th place in the women's division.
"It's awesome," said husband Chris McGovern, a professional rider with the Jelly Belly team. "She's so gifted. She can do absolutely anything she sets her mind to."
In the fall, she'll be showing some of that determination on the cyclo-cross circuit.
"Last year, she won 11 races said Chris. "That was pretty impressive.
