Researching your genealogy

I have not mentioned the Internet much, but now that computers are available for all at public libraries, I will do so on occasion.

If you had ancestors in between 1820 and 1908 that owned land, there is a good chance that you will find a copy of the original land patents or homestead documents online. The address is

When you click on document image, you have four choices, depending on the programs on your computer. I used PDF and was able to print out a clear copy. My earliest one was issued by President John Tyler, latest one by President Ulysses S. Grant.

From classes that I have attended, I know that sometimes in the homestead files there is additional genealogical information. To request the form, see below. When you receive the form, fill it out completely. You must have the number and the name from the document. You may want to enclose a copy of the document with your request.

When the National Archives receives your completed form, they will notify you as to what the cost will be to copy the documents in the file. Once they receive the funds, they will process your request.
