The Nevada Union Lady Miners and the Forest Lake Christian Lady Falcons went back to work after missing time on the diamond due to the late rainy season in western Nevada County.
And the Lady Miners looked like they hadn't missed a beat in an 11-0 win.
"I was happy with what they did. We've been off for a while with the rain. The rain just keeps coming and it's hard to get on our field (to practice)," said NU coach Ray Fowler. "Today was a very big game to come out and just get in sync since we will be back in the league schedule (today)."
NU sophomore pitching standout Becky Dowd was impressive on the rubber with four strikeouts, no walks, and no runs. She finished her appearance in the bottom of the second inning with a three-up, three-down, nine-pitch inning.
NU junior Amanda Poteet ripped a double while sophomore Kristen Schmidt knocked in four RBI on the day.
The first two Lady Falcon pitchers weren't throwing extremely hard, but they gave the Lady Miners trouble until the third inning, when NU's bats came alive against FLC's Megan Paulk.
"We have a tough time against slow pitchers," said NU assistant coach Donna Malone. "It's harder to hit off of slow pitchers, so they did well adjusting when the faster pitcher came into the game.
On a humorous note, NU's Tracy Malone told her best friend, Paulk, not to hit her with a pitch.
Late in the game, that's exactly what she did - accidentally, of course.
Malone feigned a charge to the mound while Paulk tried to control her laughter.
Nevada Union (9-8-1 overall, 4-0 Metro League) will visit third-place Metro Conference opponent McClatchy (13-6 overall, 6-2 conference) today at 4:15pm.
Forest Lake Christian (2-5 overall, 0-2 conference) will be at Placer High today at 4pm.
