The Nevada County Library Literacy Service is recruiting two AmeriCorps members for positions in western Nevada County and Truckee. As volunteers, members will help increase community awareness of, involvement in, and support for library literacy services in Nevada County. The application deadline is Friday. During the winter months pets need protection from the elements. Pet Adoption League's "Woof Over My Head" program helps provide outdoor housing for dogs and cats. Some houses have been built by groups like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and donated to PAL.

However, if you would like to have a fun family project and build your own cat or dog house, general information about pet housing is on PAL's Web site at www.pal.nccn.net. If you have a dog or cat house to donate, call PAL at 273-7958.

Sierra Services for the Blind and Quail Ridge Senior Living present a culinary masterpiece of breakfast fare at Quail Ridge Brunch. Local dignitaries will serve breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. A $5 donation may be given in advance or at the door. Quail Ridge Senior Living is at 150 Sutton Way, Grass Valley. For more information, call 265-2121.

Thanks to the volunteer efforts of a dozen community women, The Friendship Club offered the girls in the program a special session during the October school break. Called "Club Autumn," staff program coordinators Wendy Meyers and Kim Ewing put together a week filled with fun activities and educational field trips. More than 20 girls took part in art workshops led by volunteers Flo Farenheit and Jane Welles. They participated in a pottery class at the new Mud Hut, visited Jackie Weills' garden and learned the art of flower arranging. Volunteers provided a healthy lunch for the girls each day. November is the 25th anniversary of National Hospice Month. Hospice of the Foothills provides end-of-life care with the focus on comfort and compassion. The nonprofit utilizes a team of health-care professionals and trained volunteers to provide pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to the dying and their families in Nevada County. Hospice will be sponsoring a Chamber of Commerce mixer from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hospice's office, 12399 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley. The Nevada County Animal Shelter needs volunteers to take a cat or kitten(s) home for a week or two to recuperate from minor colds or upper respiratory problems. Although this doesn't happen often, the shelter says it would be nice to have a list of people who would help when the time comes.

The Adoptive Family Resource Center offers a unique therapy approach called Parent Child Interaction Therapy. PCIT is a positive and intensive treatment program designed to help children, parents and caregivers. The goal is to improve the quality of parent-child interaction and decrease the negative aspects of the relationship. The parent is coached with the help of the therapist, both in the office and at home, on ways to manage their child's behavior. For more information, call 272-9600.

The American Association of University Women will be presenting "Windows to the Disabled Community" at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Banner Grange, 12629 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley.
