Donald Ray Browning went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, due to complications of Parkinson's disease, he passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family.
His memorial service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, in Kuna, Idaho.
Don was born to Adele and Aarnon Browning on Dec. 11, 1929, in Grass Valley, Calif.
Don was the youngest of a family of eight; he had six brothers and one sister, all who were raised in French Corral on the Browning family ranch.
He attended high school in Nevada City, where he met and married his high school sweetheart Barb. They spent the first years of their marriage in Northern California, where Don worked for Pacific Gas & Electric, drove logging trucks and led trail rides at Clear Lake.
In 1959, Don and Barb moved to Meridian, Idaho. He was a businessman. Over the span of his life, he sold vacuums, sewing machines, stereos and the world's first transistor radios for Morse; he sold used cars, spent some time ranching and owned and ran the Pasty Pantry.
He also owned the Yellow Pine Lodge, where he was an outfitter taking sportsmen hunting and fishing in the Idaho Wilderness. In 1981, Don started Browning Trucking with his oldest son David and his wife, Leona.
The business provided employment and opportunities for him, his children and many other families. In 1994, Don and Barb retired to Challis, Idaho, where they built a home, made good friends and enjoyed retirement.
Don was constantly in motion and on the go. He always had a project going; he built and renovated several of their homes and enjoyed working in his shop on cars and trucks.
He loved to be outdoors; he enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, boating, four-wheeling and playing golf. He also loved to play cards and had a very competitive spirit.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barb Browning; his three sons and their wives, David and Leona Browning of Kuna, Idaho, Dan and Rainy Browning of Hamilton, Mont., Dennis and Kim Browning of Orofino, Idaho; his daughter, Liv Valentina Browning of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In California, he is survived by his brother, Dave Browning of Modesto; and his sons, Sid and Kenneth Browning; Edith Browning of Sacramento, the wife of his late brother Walt, and her family; and many nieces and nephews. In the Grass Valley area, he is survived by Butch and Cathy Fouyer, Mike Fouyer, Diana Pello, Mary Church, Shirley Halverstadt, Pat and Nita Browning, Tom Browning and Veronica Jones, and all of their families.
From out-of-state, his surviving nieces and nephews include Beverly Finley, Wick Congdon, Harry Browning, Karla Woodard and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aarnon and Adele Browning; his brothers, Harry, Clyde, Bill, Walt and Melvin Browning; his sister, Irene Stewart; and his nephews, Doug and Ron Gilbert, Robert Browning and Bill Browning.
