Warren Nelson Helman died of a heart attack on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. He was 65.
His memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 12860 La Barr Meadows Road, Grass Valley. The facility was so kindly offered to his family for this purpose.
Warren resided in Nevada City with his wife, Carol, of 31 years. He was born on Dec. 22, 1946, in Lansdale, Pa., and was raised there by his parents, Warren and Olga Helman; along with his two sisters, Barbara Griscom and Susan Kaye; and his brother, Thomas Helman.
Warren was raised Quaker and took conscientious objector status. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1969, having received a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in economics and French.
He greatly enjoyed traveling all over the world and had a wide variety of interests. After college, he spent two years in Algeria teaching English.
Warren moved to California in the mid-'70s and soon thereafter started working in the wine business.
He was well known in the community and local businesses. He worked for Freixenet USA, importing wines from various countries, but especially France.
Warren was a very active person and always enjoyed gardening, playing sports and enjoying the outdoors.
He coached soccer for Gold Country Soccer in Grass Valley for many different age levels for many years and appreciated getting to know children and their parents.
He took his family on a long vacation every year.
Most of all, Warren will always be remembered as someone who greatly loved his family; he was the best of fathers and always put his family first.
He is survived by six children, Rachel Bauerle, Emily Bayne, Leah Helman, Elizabeth Helman, Evan Helman, and Alison Helman; as well as five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
